Where it all began
I’m Namrata, though most people here know me as Nemi.
I moved to the UK from India in 2022 and everything felt new, exciting and a little overwhelming at the same time.
Somewhere along the way I started missing home in the smallest ways. The colours, the warmth, the familiarity I grew up with. The comfort of cotton. The ease of everyday pieces that just feel right.
I didn’t plan to start a brand. I was just missing home.
I found myself going back to my roots and traditional Indian block prints brought me a sense of comfort I didn’t even realise I was looking for.
What started as something personal slowly became something I loved showing up for every day.
In 2023, I took that leap and turned it into something of my own. That’s how The Indian Elephant began.
Today, it’s my way of bringing a small piece of India into everyday life here in the UK through pieces that feel easy, familiar and made to be worn often.
How it’s made
This part is just as important to me as the design itself.
I work with makers in India who carry forward traditional techniques, especially in block printing. These are skills that have been passed down over generations and I believe they deserve both recognition and respect.
Everything is made following fair trade practices. That means fair wages, safe working conditions, and a more thoughtful way of working.
For me, sustainability is about being mindful.
I choose to work with 100% cotton, produce in smaller quantities and focus on pieces that are meant to last.
The idea is simple. To make things that are not just worn but kept.
